Postgraduate Research and Advisory Work

Over 30 years experience in pure and applied aspects of insect morphology, insect taxonomy, insect ecology and behaviour, pest control, crop protection and pesticide science:

  • 1966-69. Morphology and taxonomy of beetles (Coleoptera); structural, chemical and behavioural defense mechanisms of beetles against natural predators.

  • 1969-80. Pest control in horticultural crops (top fruit and soft fruit); improving insect pollination and yield in fruit and vegetable crops; modelling the forage patterns of insect pollinators.

  • 1978-95. Management of several long-term initiatives (10+ years) for the AFRC/BBSRC, plus numerous short-term commissions (1-5 years) from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the Energy Technology Support Unit (ETSU), the European Commission (EC) and various Agrochemical Companies (e.g. ICI, BASF, Dutzi), on pest control and the efficacy of pesticide use in cereals and other arable crops; biology and control of aphid vectors of cereal viruses; modelling and forecasting aphid-virus outbreaks and their effects on crop yield (1978-90); integrated pest management in less intensive arable farming systems and in renewable energy (biomass) crops; landscape, habitat and crop management for pest control and conservation in farmland; modelling insect dispersal in fragmented landscapes; environmental and ecological effects of pesticides (1990-95).

  • 1995-2008. Consulting Entomologist for IACR-Long Ashton, MAFF and the EC. Examiner for the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES). Private consultancy and Expert Witness work.

Expert Witness Instructions

1995-2008. Expert Witness Instructions (averaging 3-4 instructions per year) involving cases of professional negligence in pesticide use and other problems concerning agricultural, industrial and domestic pest control, including compliance to health and safety legislation. These instructions have required preliminary scientific and technical advice, inspection and analysis, provision of expert opinion, preparation of reports, conferences with council and attendance at trial.
